Microsoft 365 allows to enable email encryption [https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/purview/email-encryption]. If encrypted emails are captured by the journal [https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/security-and-compliance/journaling/journaling], the email attached to the journal report is also encrypted. If this email is archived from the journal mailbox, the encrypted email is in the archive.

In order to archive unencrypted emails when email encryption is activated, it is necessary to instruct Microsoft 365 to also attach a decrypted version of the original email to the journal report. This is described in [https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/security-and-compliance/journaling/journaling#journal-reports-and-irm-protected-messages this article].

If journal reports are found in a journal mailbox that only contain the encrypted version, they will be archived. If a decrypted variant is also found, only this will be archived and the encrypted variant will be ignored.

If encrypted emails are archived from users' mailboxes, they are not treated specifically and remain encrypted in the archive.

__NOTOC__
It is highly recommended to protect the MailStore Server service with appropriate firewall rules. This document should help with setting up the required rules.

'''Important Notices:'''
* The communication channels described below MUST NOT be intercepted by any kind of email or web proxies that are provided as part of antivirus software or unified threat management gateways.
* The Windows Advanced Firewall is activated on any Windows Server installation by default. In order to connect to services (e.g. MailStore Web Access) of the MailStore Server, it is required that the appropriate firewall rules are added (see below). Some rules are automatically created during the installation.

The table below lists all TCP ports that can be utilized by MailStore Server. Not all ports need to be opened in the firewall in every scenario. These are the default ports which may have been altered. The following abbreviations are used in the source and target columns of that table:

* ANY = Any computer from private or public networks
* ADM = Computer or network used for administration
* SERVER = Server that hosts MailStore Server
Archiving profiles for archive mailboxes store emails in the same folder structure in the MailStore archive that also use archiving profiles for normal mailboxes. If archiving profiles now exist for normal mailboxes and archive mailboxes, both sources are merged in the MailStore archive and no duplicates are created.
